Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) is a condition commonly seen in athletes, especially football players. It is a malformation of the hip joint in which the femoral head and acetabulum do not align perfectly and can interfere with each other, leading to pain and limited mobility in the hip.
FAI can occur in three forms: cam, pincer and mixed type. The cam type is caused by an abnormal bulge in the femoral head, while the pincer type is caused by excessive roofing of the acetabulum. The mixed type is a combination of both types.
In soccer players, FAI can be caused by repetitive movements such as kicking, twisting, and bending the hip joint during play. Symptoms may include pain in the groin or buttocks, limited mobility in the hip, and pain when walking or running.
Treatment for FAI can be conservative or surgical, depending on the severity of the condition. Conservative treatment methods include rest, physical therapy, and medications to relieve pain. If these methods do not help, surgery may be necessary to correct the problem and relieve pain.
We are happy to advise you on any hip problems.
