FAI – femoroacetabular impingement
hip of a 16-year-old athlete
The deformation of the femoral head typically occurs between the ages of 10 and 14. The bone becomes firm at this age, but it is still growing at the growth plate. This is the weak point of the hip's musculoskeletal system. At this age, deformation of the head-neck transition can occur. The extreme form is epiphysiolysis capitis femoris. In this case, the femoral head slips completely off the femoral neck. An orthopedic emergency that requires immediate surgery.
Minor deformities often go undetected, resulting in unfavorable shapes of the head-neck transition. This is also known as CAM impingement. It is a mechanical conflict. Conservative therapy can be attempted. If there is severe restriction of movement, hip surgery is usually necessary; hip arthroscopy can be used to remove the deformity in a minimally invasive manner.
