hip prosthesis in athletes

The picture shows a surfer six months after the implantation of an artificial hip joint. The operation was performed minimally invasively by hip specialist Dr. Moser.

When operating on young athletes, the procedure must be carried out at the highest level. In particular, all soft tissue structures should be protected as much as possible in order to achieve the best possible surgical result.
Only the highest quality, modern implants are used. In the case of the surfer shown, a short-stem prosthesis was used for severe coxarthrosis and hip pain. The implant is particularly bone-sparing and allows a very large range of motion with very low abrasion values of the sliding pair. This ensures that the prosthesis lasts a very long time. A modern anterior approach was used for the operation.
A minimally invasive anterior approach (AMIS, ALMIS) allows absolute muscle protection. The hip can be fully loaded again immediately after the operation.

However, the hip should be given considerable rest for four weeks, and sporting activities should even be avoided for three months after the operation. During this phase, the bone grows into the prosthetic material and ensures that the prosthesis lasts for a long time. High-impact sports should even be avoided for six months.
